Holland

Photographers with an interest in nature tend to focus on the wild side of nature and leave out as many human influences as possible. The problem is that one ends up with images showing wild(er)ness without human interference, a highly unrealistic view especially where I live in the most densely populated province of one of the most densely populated countries of the EU. Images showing the contrast between the urban world and the natural one can tell an interesting story. The image above is of the natura 2000 area voordelta in the Netherlands with coastal saltmarshes and the heavy industry of the harbor of Rotterdam in the background.

Zuid-Hollands Landschap

Als inwoner van de meest dichtbevolkte provincie van het meest drukbevolkte land van de EU, zijn de skylines van Rotterdam, Den Haag en de Europoort nooit ver weg. Veel natuurfotografen (waaronder ik vroeger ook) willen alleen mooie wilde natuur laten zien. Dit laat een erg onrealistisch beeld zien. Dat contrast tussen mens en natuur is fotografisch juist een hele mooie uitdaging. Hoe zet je die tegenstelling om in beelden? Hierboven een nogal scherp contrast tussen de kwelders van natura 2000 gebied de Voordelta en de zware industrie van de maasvlakte net achter de dijk.
